Welcome to Nighthogs, where the door is always open, the light is always on, and the coffee is as scorching as the humor. Or even a goat who just wants to be left alone. Or a zebra with a story or two to tell about a crocodile. It could be a rat with an anger-management problem. Pearls Before Swine was voted the Best Comic Strip of 2003 by the National Cartoonists Society, and in Nighthogs, the strip's third collection, Stephan Pastis proves that his strip is one of the sharpest, funniest comics in newspapers. You never know who you'll bump into at a diner at night. ![]()

The Ambergris trilogy is made up of three novels, each of which has become a cult classic in its own right: City of Saints and Madmen, Shriek: An Afterword, and Finch. ![]() The city is bursting at its seams, seemingly held together only by the tense, fraying tendrils of his investigation. Ultimately, the fate of Ambergris comes to lie in the hands of John Finch, a beleaguered detective with a murder on to solve and too many loyalties for one man to bear. There are stories within stories, mystery, mayhem, and a dark history that threatens to consume the city itself as the gray caps, the mysterious and deadly mushroom people who once ruled Ambergris and have since been driven underground, now threaten to rise again. Ambergris bristles with intellectual fervor and religious rivalries it thrives on cultural upheaval, and its politics are never short on intrigue, conspiracy, and even terror. More than twenty years ago, Jeff VanderMeer first introduced the world to the fictional city of Ambergris, a beautiful and sinister sprawling metropolis populated by artists and thieves, composers and murderers, geniuses and madmen. This doesn't reflect badly on the story whatsoever, and further cements the idea that Wild Fell is a ghost story as opposed to a typical haunted house story. Wild Fell is a bit unorthodox as well, with the narrator not even getting to the "haunted house" until the majority of the book has passed. The coda can stand as a novella of it's own, and was a unique, fun way to wrap up the novel. The main narrative of Enter, Night ended after 340 pages and was followed by a 70 page coda, a translation of an old document which cleared up a lot of the backstory/history behind the vampire infestation of Parr's Landing.
